3 Ways to Turn Around Self-Doubt

You might constantly be doubting whether you made a wise decision about a career, a partner, or the direction you have chosen for your life. But, unfortunately, the most unpleasant aspect of self-doubt is that your concerns often become self-fulfilling prophecies, which may be very damaging.

On the other hand, when you take steps to improve your self-confidence, more aspects of life will gradually improve. Your decision-making abilities are improved and the right people tend to come into your life at the right time, allowing you to accomplish higher work. You can finally build the life you want when you have greater self-confidence.

Use these techniques to silence your inner critic and rebuild your confidence:

1. Stop and think. Consider why you're feeling uncomfortable about yourself. Understand the context that made you feel uncomfortable. For example, being faced with a task that you don't think you'll be able to do effectively is a major source of self-doubt.

  • Do you often criticize yourself? Likely, you are unconsciously repeating negative ideas that are preventing you from progressing. "I can't do this" and "I'm not strong enough" become excuses to avoid when beginning new adventures that may provide you with many advantages.

  • Think about your own self-doubting thoughts the next time they occur to you and why you believe them to be true. If you are tormented with anxieties due to past mistakes, you must commit to living in the present. Today is a fresh start!

  • Transform your negative self-talk with good thoughts about how capable and sufficient you are. Make this transition every time you feel self-doubting thoughts begin to creep into your mind. Gradually, you'll find yourself instinctively singing your praises rather than your fears.

2. Practice self-understanding. When you're feeling self-conscious about your skills, it's natural to start berating yourself. However, the action of berating oneself for what you believe you have done wrong only helps perpetuate a cycle of frustration and procrastination. Recognize that making mistakes does not suggest that you are a terrible or incompetent person; rather, it just means you are human.

  • Allow yourself to realize that, although you're not perfect, you are someone who constantly seeks to perform the most outstanding work you can, and that's a good thing. Believe that each life challenge is a chance to learn something new and grow as a person.

3. Make a list. Create a visual to help you notice what self-doubts you are having. Create two columns on a piece of paper. List any and all of the self-doubting ideas you're experiencing right now on the left-hand side of your paper. List all of the positive facts that alleviate your concerns on the right-hand side of the page.

  • Consider the following scenario: you've been given an assignment that you've never performed before, and you instantly become negative because you believe your abilities are insufficient to do the task successfully. On the left-hand side of the list, put "I can't do this because I don't have the qualifications." On the right side, put "I was assigned this work because I'm a fast learner who always gets the job done."

  • You'll discover that you have a much higher number of positive attributes than negative ones on your list. So you should keep looking through your skills, experience, and qualifications (yes, they are there) until your good list exceeds your negative list.

Self-doubt can rob you of the chance to achieve greater levels of accomplishment in your personal and professional life. When you have doubts about yourself, it's natural to want to push them away. However, you want to be able to quickly dismiss your inner voice when it appears. By following the method described above, you will be able to overcome your self-doubt, increase your self-confidence, and open the door to new and exciting opportunities.
